Description: This relative to Texas Mountain Laurel (S. secundiflora), has pink flowers and long black seed pods that are well defined between the seeds giving it the necklace common name. It is native to the south-central states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and north-central Texas. It is recommended as a great alternative to crape myrtles (Lagerstroemia spp.) in its native range. The flowers can range from white to maroon, but are usually various shades of pink. The bark especially on new growth tends to be dark olive green.
Uses: The yellow sap from the wood can be used for a yellow dye.
Note: Seeds are reported to be poisonous.
